I've been reading some great research papers lately. Aside from the papers being awesome. I was struck by how amazing the signal to noise ratio is in these papers.
This is in sharp contrast to my usual bill of fare. The wide rage of RSS feeds that I was able to read thanks to Bloglines.
Adam describes this contrast as "New Ideas" v. "New Events". Which is to say, I want to learn new cool ideas, not about the latest/hottest events, news or products.
So, I'm putting my RSS reader where my mouth is. I've decided not to read Digg/Reddit/Boingboing/Metafilter or any of the other "News Site" except for Slashdot - which I've been visiting for a very long time. I'm still reading my friends blags (blogs), Twitter and Flickr feeds. I reduced the web comics that I read to the ones that I actually enjoy.
This should be an interesting experiment for me. I enjoy keeping up to date with information, I love being able to meet a random person and refer them to some "cool" website that they might enjoy. But this has to stop. I need to focus on cool ideas. I want to read more books, I want to play more video games, I want to watch more movies.
We will see how this develops.
